MERTHYR TOWN:
CLUB LOOKBOOK
The club, as we know it, has had a tumultuous history. Merthyr Town was founded at first, in 1908, and entered the Football League in 1920.
They folded in 1934, were reborn as Merthyr Tydfil FC in 1945, joined the Conference in the late '80s, and liquidated again in 2010, at which point the club reverted to its original name and started over. (That’s a lot).

The 2024/25 campaign saw the Martyrs crowned as Southern League Premier South champions, after an incredible season which included a 32-game unbeaten run in the league.

“The badge draws its deeper meaning from the town’s own history, particularly the story of Tydfil the Martyr, the Welsh princess whose death in the 5th century gave Merthyr its name. “Merthyr” meaning “Martyr.” The club’s identity as The Martyrs reflects this heritage, connecting modern football culture with a much older tradition of resilience, sacrifice, and community pride. By incorporating enduring Welsh symbols, the badge becomes more than a sporting emblem.” - Merthyr Town

Now, Merthyr Town F.C. compete in the National League North, the 6th tier of English football. It’s the club’s highest level of play in 30 years.

For a club that died twice, it’s quite the achievement to still be playing football where that old ironworks ground used to be.
Unfortunately, the dream of promotion will have to wait another year, but the fact that they’re making progress towards the EFL is something.

Merthyr are one of my fave clubs I've visited as a fan, and hosted as a club official. Tremendous people, and seeing your club win at a ground at which Atalanta lost is quite something.
Shame seeing them miss out on the playoffs this year. It's only a matter of time.
Hope they reach the pinnacle one day, proper fairytale stuff. Who doesn’t love a working class, community club story like this.
