CURAÇAO:
HISTORY MADE
Forget the result, or don’t. Curaçao scored their first-ever goal at the World Cup. That’s worthy of celebration. Don't call it a fluke. The temptation here is to file it under a happy accident, a deflection, a scramble, a stroke of good fortune. It was nothing like that at all.
Curaçao worked a brilliant switch of play, advanced down Germany's right, and broke loose, allowing Livano Comenencia to hit one with enough power and precision to beat Manuel Neuer. History made.
That’s a special goal. The Blue Wave aren’t party crashers here at the World Cup. The Bacuna brothers, Comenencia, and some of the players who learned the game in the Netherlands and chose the island are here on full display. This is a national team assembled with all of this in mind and reflects the passion it takes to make the switch. They went out and made a nation proud. No one is dwelling on the result against Germany because, in all fairness, Curaçao had it all to do against the 4 time winners.
But for the people of Curaçao, this team isn’t only names on a teamsheet, it’s family, culture, and belief from a place most of the world couldn't find on a map that can produce something the whole world gets to enjoy. Long after the final whistle and the scoreline fades, a generation of kids on the island can know that the dream isn't just for other countries. It's for them too. That's what this team gives its people.
