SOCCEROOS:
ARRIVED WITH NOTHING TO LOSE
Wow. Shock of the tournament (so far). I’m shocked but equally impressed with what I saw. Australia came in with a game plan so solid and compact that it was hard for Türkiye to break them down. Combine that with moments of individual brilliance, and you have a recipe for an upset.
Australia also call it soccer, and for now, in Group D, it looks like everyone should start. You can have all the possession in the world but never convert, as was the case for Türkiye last night. The smallest of margins, attention to detail, and defensive shape will get you wins at this level.
Tony Popovic looked at a Türkiye side full of Champions League names and decided to fill his team with debutants walking out for their first World Cup, wide-eyed and in awe of where they were. He asked them to hold the line against formidable opposition, and they did. Throwing their bodies in front of everything, keeping their shape when their legs were clearly on fire, and refusing, over and over, to give in.
By the end of the 90 minutes, the Socceroos proved that every underdog needs to believe in their organization and trust they can beat anyone on the biggest stage there is. That's why people should care. Australia were never the favorites to win the group, but in a tournament that so often rewards big nations with talented individuals, the most important thing is how you play as a team. The boys from down under are flipping the script and sizing up a trip to the knockouts.
