CAPE VERDE'S FAIRYTALE SUMMER
Cape Verde are the best story at the World Cup, and it really isn't close. They’ve refused to look out of place, punching well above their weight. Every small nation that manages to do that makes the whole tournament better.
The fact they held one of the tournament favorites and football royalty, Spain, to a goalless draw is unreal if you think about it.
Cape Verde is an archipelago with a population of around 500,000 off the coast of Senegal. A small but deeply passionate island country. It comes as a relative surprise to most that they’ve been able to go toe to toe with some big-time nations and remain unbeaten, but not to those who call Cape Verde home.
After the Spain result that shocked everyone, they went on to draw again with Uruguay 2-2, scoring the first World Cup goal in their history. The free kick from Kevin Pina was a moment I won’t forget, and no one on the islands will either. It was a well-taken strike from way outside the box, screaming its way into the bottom corner of the net.
It would have been cool just to score any which way, but to have a highlight like that is the way to do it. It’ll live on forever.
The Blue Sharks are giving their people, who were told they were too small to matter, a chance to watch their flag fly on the biggest stage.
That’s what football is all about.
Goalkeeper Vozinha was a name almost no one outside the islands knew a week ago, and has now passed 14 million followers on Instagram, making him an overnight folk hero. Where’s the statue gunna go?
Every time a tiny nation refuses to back down, the game gets bigger. With the way the tournament is panning out and with some 3rd place finishers moving on, there’s no reason Cape Verde can’t make it to the round of 32. What a fairytale summer.
